“KAIWAN, GET YOUR THINGS; we need to go!” Hugo began shoving random items into a sack. “Hurry: there are at least two mad wyrms and an uppity Goddess in the camp!”

“Leave me here please: I choose death!” Kaiwan had her head over a bucket again. “I do not see why I am the one that must do all of the vomiting!”

“I don’t think you’re grasping what I’m trying to tell you, Kaiwan.”

“Either fetch me some more charcoal or get out!” She hurled a pillow at him then. “Damn you for this! Why did no one ever warn me?”

Alyrra bustled in with some kind of herbal tea. “General Khuff, Marwyn is looking for you everywhere! He says it’s urgent.”

“He wants to throw me into a volcano. Apparently it’s all Javia’s idea.”

Kaiwan glowered at him. “Truthseeker is glowing again: by any chance are you exaggerating about the volcano?”

“Honestly? I can’t be sure: apparently Marwyn is a wyrm, and he and the other wyrm that came to visit him think that I am the next Keeper of the Eternal Flame. Javia is encouraging them.”

“What other wyrm?” The Ca’Ryln was fascinated.

“So you aren’t at all worried by Marwyn being a giant lizard then? Or about the volcano that Javia wants me to relight?”

“You said there is another wyrm! Are they friendly? I know that Marwyn is kind already, and I am certain that Javia knows what She is doing.”

He hesitated to reply. “I’m not sure if I ought to tell you this, Kaiwan. The other wyrm said that Slo’annathorys had murdered her young some years ago.”

“But why would he do such a terrible thing?” The Ullensian was clearly horrified. “Is the wyrm sure that it was him?”

“She seems fairly convinced of it. She is the one that attacked the Vale of Ryln. It was revenge for what he did, apparently.”

Kaiwan burst into tears. Alyrra glared at Hugo and chased him out of the tent. “Now you’ve upset her again! Run along and see what the wyrms actually want, General Khuff!”

Hugo scowled and stomped back to discover his fate. “Alright, what are you crazy lizards on about?”

Sherni was too busy braiding Javia’s hair to reply. Marwyn smiled. “We believe that you are a wyrm, Hugo!”

“That’s impossible: my father would have told me! I would have noticed by now, even if he hadn’t. I’m human, and that’s an end to it. Look, if you really want me to relight this volcano, fine: I’ll do it. But there is to be no more foolish talk of my being a wyrm!”

Javia giggled. “Hugo is not a wyrm!”

“Ha – you see? Even your Goddess agrees with me!”

The Goddess reached for some more bacon. “Not yet anyhow.”

“What? Now hold on – You can’t come to my encampment, eat all of the bacon, and then get all cryptic! What do You mean: not yet? Either I’m a flying lizard or I’m not!”

She pouted at his questions. “Fine: Hugo is not a flying lizard now, and he never shall become one either!
